The -=Silver=- Circle Lowbie Guide

Welcome travelers from near and far!

We, the -=Silver=- Circle have created this page in order to give Newbies/Lowbies a basic overview and to help ya'll get started. Of course, the path we take you on below is one of many.

Overview

Just like there are different classes and races, there are many options for mobs to fight, equipment to wear, areas to explore, etc. No doubt once you become familiar with the game you will discover your own methods and preferences. Others on the mud will give you varying information as well. This is part of the fun! Mirkwood is a game with many options and many ideas. Feel free to try different things or to stick with what you know best. Don't be afraid to mess around with a few new characters to try out different classes or races. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Don't be afraid to start over if you realize that didn't gain certain spells or skills at creation, or if you have 100000 xp per level -- it's much easier to level while you are lower and you'll thank yourself for starting over then rather then getting to level 70 and then struggling because you don't have what you need! Most new people create a character, play around with it a bit to learn the mud, and then go and recreate once they understand more about what they are doing. This is perfectly normal!

Logging On

When you first log on to the mud you'll be asked to create a character. Chose a name and a password that you'll remember. Then chose the race, sex, alignment, and class you want your character to be. Read the prompts if you need any help. Next is customization, which is recommended for a real character, but not a big deal if you just want to log on and try things out.

In customization you'll chose the skills and spells that you want to have at creation. You will have opportunity later to add other skills and spells if you want by using trains (you'll gain one train per level). What you want to gain depends on what kind of character you want to be, and what kind of race/class combination you picked. Current players on the mud will be more then willing to help you with this if you have questions so we won't go into this anymore here.

You will then be asked if you want to be in color. We recommend chosing "yes" as color brings life to Mirkwood! If you change your mind later just type "color" and it will switch you back and forth.

Mirkwood Academy

When you enter the mud you will be in front of the infamous "Mirkwood Academy". Here you will learn about the mud and how to play. You can only enter this area if you are level 5 or lower, so be sure to explore it before you are too high! Type "north" to enter the academy. Read the descriptions and follow the directions they give you in order to learn things.

One of the first things you'll learn in the Mirkwood Academy is training and practicing. You'll start out on the mud with a few trains and a few practices, and you gain more each time you level. Trains can be used to boost your attributes as well as buy new spells and skills. Practices can be used to make your skills and spells better and more effective. We recommend you train your stats in this order: first max out wisdom, then consitution, then intelligence, then dexterity, then strength. You can read more about what each does by typing "help wisdom" etc.

You should also type "autoloot" and "autosac" to turn these two features on. This will make you automatically loot the corpses of the mobs you kill, and automatically sac their corpses giving you some coppers. In the mud school the mobs that you kill will give you equipment which you can wear by typing "wear all" or "wear shoes", etc.

If you get lost somewhere or want to get out, type "recall". This will bring you to Outside the Prancing Pony, with Barliman Butterball in Bree. There is a map of Bree you can view by typing "look map" in that room. If you want to get back to the Mirkwood Academy type "recall, up" and you'll be in the room you were in when you entered the mud.

While fighting you will get hurt and your hitpoints will go down. You regenerate these hit points, mana, and moves better by sleeping then by standing. If you want to regenerate even faster you'll need to go to Strider. Sleeping in his room makes you heal faster then sleeping in other rooms. To get to Strider just type "recall" and then go to "sleep". When you wake up you'll be in his room which is east and north of recall. Type "heal" to see a list of some other things he can help you out with. Type "look bin" to see into a bin where there other players can throw items that might be helpful to you. If there is a ring in the bin you want to see type "get ring bin" and it'll try and get the item for you. If the item is too high for you to use it won't let you remove it. When you are ready to venture back into mud school just go "south", "west", and "up".

Occasionally (or for some, frequently) you might die. When you die you will be transported to Strider naked while your corpse with all your items remains in the room where you died. You can either walk back to where ever you died and pick up your stuff or, if you are Level 5 or below you can type "outfit" to get a full set of equipment. If you decide to go find your corpse make sure you grab a light -- from Strider you can buy one by going "south", "west", "northeast", "east", and "south". Then type "buy torch" and "wear torch" and you are good to go!

Once you find your corpse type "get all corpse" and then "wear all" to re-equip yourself with the items in your inventory.

We recommend you fight in the mud school and mini-mordor (recall, up, south) until at least level 5 to familiarize yourself with the way the mud works.

Basic Commands

Question -- Typing "question How do I kill something?" will make you ask "How do I kill something?" over the question channel. You can use this channel from the moment you log onto the mud. Players who have this channel on will be able to answer questions you might have about whatever. Chat is another channel that you can use starting at level 2. You can get a listing of other channels by typing "channel".

Who -- Gives you a listing of the players on the mud.

Score -- Will bring up a screen with information about your character.

Worth -- Shows your gold, valor points (help valor), total experience points, trains, practices, big kills, and deaths.

Equipment -- Shows you what equipment you are wearing.

Attribute -- Shortcut to show you your attributes. Typing "help strength" "help intelligence" etc will give you more information on what each attribute does.

Info Groups -- Tells you what spell groups you have.

Info Groups (insert spell group here) -- Tells you what spells that spell group has.

Skills -- Tells you what skills you have.

Spells -- Tells you what spells you have.

Practice -- Tells you what spells/skills you currently have at your level, and their percentage learned. You get better at spells and skills by using them and by practicing them at your guild. Mirkwood Academy will explain more about practicing spells/skills so we won't go into them any further here.

Helpful Tips

--You can only wear items that are your level or below. Items will only remain in your inventory when you log off if they are two levels above you or lower. If items are three levels or more above the level you are when you quit they will disappear.

--Your character will only be saved if you are Level 2 or higher so be sure to level before you quit!

--Northeast of recall there is a caravan leader. Each time you find a caravan leader location they will remember you and you can use any caravan location to travel back to a location that you've found in the past.

--Food can be found quickly by going to recall, northeast, east, north. Jerky fills you up the best from that store. Water, if you are thirsty, can be found in the fountain east of recall. You can fill up the water skin or other container that you might buy from the fountain by typing "fill (item)".

--Alignment is a major part of Mirkwood. If you want to be of "evil" alignment then you must fight mobs with good alignment in order to get better xp per kill. If you want to be of "good" alignment then you must fight mobs with evil alignment to get better xp per kill. If you are currently "evil" but start fighting evil aligned mobs, you will find that the xp you receive isn't as good and you will also notice your alignment changing to good. The same is true if you are of good alignment and you start fighting good mobs.

--Mirkwood has what is called an "hours bonus" to help newbies who are having trouble. The short story is this -- if you have more then 3 times your level in hours then you get extra xp when you kill a mob. For example, if you are Level 5, in order to get the best xp per kill you should have at least 15 hours under that character. If you are Level 10, you'll need at least 30 hours. So if you have the opportunity to leave your character online when you are not playing them in the beginning to up your hours then do so, because you'll end up getting better xp for each kill! Not having the hours isn't really bad, it just means that it'll take longer to level.

--Fix your prompt so it gives you a little more helpful information during your adventures in Mirkwood. Some suggestions can be found by clicking here.

After Level 5

At Level 6 you will be unable to enter the mud school and will have to venture elsewhere to level. Here are some recommendations on where to go, with the mobs to kill and the levels of those mobs:

Evil Align:

-- Go to Fourth Tower (recall 2nw w nw w n 2ne 2e 14n 3ne 13e 3ne 8n e) and kill servants (5).

--Stay at Fourth Tower (recall 2nw w nw w n 2ne 2e 14n 3ne 13e 3ne 8n e) and kill nobles & merchants (15). They are neutral so it won't hurt your alignment.

--Go to Emerald City (recall, 2nw w nw 2w 2s 24w sw buy NT ticket up go dock w 5sw to Center of NT and then all e s 3se 3w) and try munchkins (10), then gillikins (14), then quadlings (18), then winkies (22). Be careful though! Each type of mob will assist their kind. So if you are fighting a quadling and another quadling walks in, he will attack. If you are attacking a quadling and a munchkin is in the room however, then you are okay because he won't attack.

Good Align:

--Go to Barrow Downs (recall 2se 4sw se 2s 2se 2e) and kill sons of Mher-Dok (5), mistwraiths (10), then fire-eyed shades (7), then barrow wights (10).

--Go to Wyvern Tower (recall 2nw w nw 2w 2s 3w 11d all east) and kill stone gargoyles (9), angry gargoyle (10), elite gargoyle (12), minotaur (14), chocopudding (15), lesser golems (16), minotaur captain (17), ancient wyvern (18).

--Go to Fourth Tower (recall 2nw w nw w n 2ne 2e 14n 3ne 13e 3ne 8n e) and kill nobles & merchants (15). They are neutral so it won't hurt your alignment.

--Go to Drow (recall 3se e 3se 2s 17e 4ne 4n 2w s 2d) and kill citizens (10), nobleman (12), house mage (15), warrior (21), weapons master (23), Goral/Jacon/Tayloth (24), high priestess (24) Be careful in here! There area lot of things that will attack you just by you walking into the room.
